Effect of C/Ti ratio on the laser ignited self-propagating high-temperature synthesis reaction of Al-Ti-C system for fabricating TiC/Al composites

TiC/Al composite was successfully synthesized utilizing laser ignited self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) of Al-C-Ti system with the different C/Ti molar ratio. When the molar ratio of C to Ti is below 1:1 in the starting materials, in addition to fine TiC particulates, a large amount of Al₃Ti phase was found in the composites; however, when the molar ratio of C to Ti is 1:1 in the starting materials, the Al₃Ti phase was almost completely eliminated and the distribution of TiC particulates generally appeared to be more homogeneous throughout the products synthesized.     

A quantitative relationship between per capita GDP and scientometric criteria

There exists a quantitative relationship, which can be expressed as G=kF(lgP)N, where G is per capita GDP, F gross expenditure on R&D as % of GDP, P patent applications, N Internet users per 10,000 inhabitants, and k a constant ranging from 0.4 to 1.2 in most countries. The mechanism of the relationship is explained in the paper.     

High Gd Concentration GaGdN Grown at Low Temperatures

GaGdN layers were grown at temperatures below 300°C by radio-frequency plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on sapphire substrates. GaGdN samples with high Gd concentration as high as 12.5% were obtained by lowering the growth temperature. X-ray diffraction results showed no obvious secondary phase, which means that the phase separation can be suppressed by the growth at low temperatures. All samples, including those grown at room temperature, showed ferromagnetic characteristics. Photoluminescence emission was observed, though spectra exhibit broad and sharp luminescence bands related to many kinds of defects. It is suggested that electrons coming from defects, especially, nitrogen vacancy, stabilize ferromagnetism, and that the carrier-induced ferromagnetism occurs in the low-temperature-growth GaGdN.     

Controlling the Critical Temperature in Mg1−x Al x B2

Here we report synthesis and characterization of high quality samples of the superconducting system Mg_1−x Al _x B₂, with a novel optimized preparation method, in a wide range of Al concentration. All the physical properties of the samples can be tuned continuously with increasing Al content. We have characterized the samples for their structural, morphological and magnetic properties with high resolution XRD, SEM-EDS and susceptibility measurements. We have prepared a large number of Al doped MgB₂ in the range 0<x<0.57. All the samples are bulk superconductors and the critical temperature show a smooth and regular behavior as a function of x.
